Exploring the Internet One Site at a Time

Evaluating Web Sites

When you need to do research, the World Wide Web is a great resource. Here are some steps to help you use the Web for your research.

To evaluate whether the information on the site will be accurate and unbiased, ask yourself these questions:

  • Who created the site? Institutions such as government agencies and museums often provide more accurate and objective information than individuals do. If the author is an individual, can you tell whether that person is an expert in the field or just someone interested in the topic? One way to find out may be to see what else, if anything, the author has written.

  • What is the purpose of the site? Is it designed to educate, to entertain, or to sell something? If the site is designed to promote a product or a specific point of view, the information on it may be biased or incomplete.

  • Can you find the same information on any other sites? Just as you should use more than one book when doing research, you should check facts from the Web by looking at more than one site.

For this WebQuest, you will be evaluating sites that have information on cancer and cardiovascular (heart) disease.  You MUST click on each link below and carefully review the sites.  To help you decide if the sites are good or bad, you will fill out a checklist for EACH site that you visit.

HEART DISEASE

First, click on the heart to download the checklist that you will use to evaluate these websites.  The file will open in a new window.  You will then need to click on "File", then "Save As" and save the checklist to your server folder before beginning work on it.  Leave this window open and return to this page to begin evaluating the following web sites on Cardiovascular Disease (Each link will open in a new window. When you are done reviewing each site, close the window and return to this page to review the next site):

American Heart Association

New York State Department of Health

Alternative Medicine

Heart Math

CANCER

First, click on the pink ribbon to download the checklist that you will use to evaluate these websites.  The file will open in a new window.  You will then need to click on "File", then "Save As" and save the checklist to your server folder before beginning work on it.  Leave this window open and return to this page to begin evaluating the following web sites on Cancer (Each link will open in a new window. When you are done reviewing each site, close the window and return to this page to review the next site):

The Road to Healing (You will no longer be able to evaluate this site, but I left the link here so you can read what happened to the site.)

American Metabolic Institute

Dr. Day

American Cancer Society

National Cancer Institute

Conclusion

Now that you have reviewed all eight of these web sites, You have two more tasks:

  • Click on the heart diagram to open a new form with additional questions about heart disease.  Again, click on "File", then "Save As" and save the new form to your server folder before beginning work on it.  Complete this form and then:
  • Print out all 3 forms and give them to your teacher.  Make sure your name and period are on all 3 forms!
